May 28, 2010

Ron Hancock, Southwestern Regional Director

Jim: What area do you cover for Nelnet?

Ron: I work in the Southwest region covering Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

Jim: Where do you live?

Ron: Bixby, Oklahoma.

Jim: How many years have you worked in the financial aid industry?

Ron:  I have worked in the industry for 19 years, and I have been with Nelnet since 2000.

Jim: What previous positions have you held?

Ron: Prior to joining Nelnet, I was an Account Manager for Sallie Mae. I also worked for Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program in School and Lender Services and was a Student Financial Services Counselor at Oklahoma State University – Okmulgee.

Jim: Are you a member of any financial aid industry associations?

Ron: I am a member of all the state associations in my region as well as SWASFAA.

Jim: What is your education background?

Ron: I have a Master of Arts degree from Bellevue University and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Oklahoma.

Jim: Ron, tell me about your family.

Ron: I am married to Heather with two children, Braxton (4) and Brylee (1). We have one slightly challenged dog named Teddy, a fish named Optimus Prime, and a rabbit in the backyard I like to call “Bullseye”.

Jim: What are some of your interests outside of work?

Ron: Sporting events with an emphasis on college football (especially University of Oklahoma), spending time with my family, playing golf, and occasionally enjoying a card game.

Jim: Tell me one thing about you that many people may not know.

Ron:  I blocked Troy Aikman’s layup in a pick-up basketball game over Christmas break when he was home from UCLA. He called foul, and I disagreed. Luckily, I didn’t hurt him or he may have never led the Dallas Cowboys to Super Bowl wins or entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I can beat Scott Spethman in golf while only using my 7-iron. I saved Don Buehrer’s life, although he may not remember. I have a movie named after me.
