Dawn Knight, Rocky Mountain & Western Regional Director (AZ, ID, NV, ND, OR, WA, WY)

Jim: What area do you cover for Nelnet?

Dawn: I cover states in the Western and Rocky Mountain regions including Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

Jim: Where do you live?

Dawn: Parker, Colorado.

Jim: How many years have you worked in the financial aid industry?

Dawn:  I have worked in the industry for 11 years, all of them at Nelnet.

Jim: What previous positions have you held?

Dawn: Prior to joining Nelnet, I was an Exercise Physiologist for seven years.

Jim: Are you a member of any financial aid industry associations?

Dawn: I am a member of the state associations in my region as well as WASFAA.

Jim: What is your education background?

Dawn: I have a M.S. degree in exercise physiology from Purdue University and a B.A. degree in business administration and tax accounting from the University of Southern Maine.

Jim: Dawn, tell me about your family.

Dawn: I am married to my own amazing personal chef, Ed Fertig.  How he can put up with the likes of me makes me speechless. We have two adorable diva ‘rescue cats’, Henry and Lily. Lily cleans Henry’s head and face all the time. Henry doesn’t do anything to or for Lily.

Jim: What are some of your interests outside of work?

Dawn: Road biking is my ‘thing’, but I also love to travel, lift weights, hike, read, work out, laugh, hang out with the hubby, do mischievous and immature things with my friends, and generally just enjoy the moment.

Jim: Tell me one thing about you that many people may not know.

Dawn: This is tough as there are so many interesting things about me.  I was on the Bozo the Clown TV show when I was four years old; I won a competition for putting as many blocks as I could in a bucket while blindfolded.  I still have the prize to this day: a Cat & Mouse game.
