Bill Healy, Director of Student Financial Assistance at Florida Southern College

Kristi Jones: What are you most proud of with your financial aid office?

Bill Healy: The flexibility, hard work and patience of my staff.

Kristi: What has been the biggest challenge for your office over the past 12 months?

Bill: Clearly, it has been the conversion of data while implementing the Direct Lending suite, including Ed Express, as we had not been set up with this system previously.

Kristi: Are there any primary or coming trends that you see in the financial aid office?

Bill: I think we will see more integration of functions within the office.  There will be cross training among job responsibilities and even the different departments.

Kristi: Do you have any tips for schools that are transitioning to Direct Lending (or what has been helpful to you as you transition)?

Bill: Take advantage of the trainings, as the webinars and regional training have been extremely helpful.

Kristi: Who within the financial aid community has been your mentor?

Bill: Steve Stocks has been my mentor.  He was hired as a consultant when I first came into Financial Aid.  He was an active member of VASFAA and SASFAA and his calm presence makes him a great teacher.

Kristi: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Bill: Undoubtedly, a baseball player.  I wanted to be a left fielder in the big leagues.

Kristi: What do you like most about your job?

Bill: Definitely the challenge, change, and the fact that every day is different.  There is never a boring day in financial aid!

Kristi: What is your favorite book?

Bill: Right now I am reading The Yankee Years by Joe Torre.  I am not necessarily a big Yankees fan, but I am a big Joe Torre fan.  My favorite readings are: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey; Now, Soar With Your Strengths by Donald O. Clifton; Now, Discover Your Strengths by Donald O. Clifton, and How Full Is Your Bucket? by Donald O. Clifton.

Kristi: Name one thing that many people do not know about you.

Bill: Most people do not know that my undergraduate degree is in music education.

Kristi: What is your favorite television show?

Bill: My wife and I watch NCIS together.  When I do have control over the remote, I enjoy watching CNN, Face the Nation (CBS), Meet the Press (NBC) and This Week (ABC).  I am a news junkie.

Kristi: What positions have you held within the industry?

Bill: I am the Past President of MSFAA (Michigan, 1994-1995) and FASFAA (Florida, 2008-2009).

Kristi: Where did you work prior to Florida Southern?

Bill: I was the Director of Financial Aid at Liberty University, Saginaw Valley State University, Northwood University and Lynn University, prior to coming to Florida Southern College.

Kristi Jones, Southern Regional Director (AL, FL, GA, MS, PR)
