Susan Brodie, Director, Learning Resources Group

What are you most proud of with your department?

Susan Brodie: I am most proud of our adaptability. When things change we adapt and move in whatever direction is needed.  A lot of things have changed over the past year–we’ve lost staff; we’ve been asked to rethink all of the programs we currently offer and determine if they are really needed, need to be changed, or need to be shelved for a while.

Also, we have just started creating a social learning world, meaning we are realizing that our culture is working within the social media for their day-to-day.  So, we’ve created a Twitter site for Nelnet Learning called “Learn 4 Growth.”

What has been your biggest work related challenge during the past 12 months?

Susan: Making our internal learning opportunities work for a company that is totally overwhelmed with change and growth.  It is always hard to include time for training, but today it is even harder.

We are the team that provides professional development and leadership development for all our internal associates.

We have hired over 600 new associates since January 2010, and that means a huge New Hire Orientation focus.

If a school were to ask you what it is you do for Nelnet that impacts them, what would you say?

Susan: I make sure everyone has an opportunity to learn every day at Nelnet, which is basically our departmental mission.

What are the goals of your department?

Susan: Our main goal is to provide effective learning opportunities for associates in response to requests by our leaders.  We strive to be high quality in response to our associates’ feedback and needs.

If you could be anywhere in the universe for New Year’s Eve, where would you be?

Susan: Sydney, Australia, because that’s where New Year’s Eve starts.

What is your favorite movie snack?

Susan: I love popcorn and Milk Duds together.

Name one thing that many people do not know about you.

Susan: I think people would assume that I am always very extroverted, but I really love solitude and spending reflective time by myself.
