Faces of Nelnet: Jen Burkey, Enrollment Processing

November 16, 2010

Interviewed by Dawn Knight, Western Regional Director, Nelnet Partner Solutions

Jennifer (Jen) Burkey, Manager, Enrollment Processing

What are you most proud of with your department?

Jen Burkey: Over the last year, I have been most proud of my department’s ability to adapt to a number of changes, the biggest being the amount of volume we have received.  They have been challenged to think creatively, be flexible, and have worked many hours to meet our customers needs.

What has been your biggest work related challenge during the past 12 months?

Jen: Specifically, the industry changes have been the most challenging.  Those changes have meant additional functions and new processes that we needed to address to make sure we’re servicing the loans up to the standards of our customers.

If a school were to ask you what it is you do for Nelnet that impacts them, what would you say?

Jen: For schools, when they submit their enrollment info via clearinghouse, NSLDS, etc. my department is the one that ensures all enrollment information is updated to the loan(s) and reflects the borrower’s current status.

What are the goals of your department?

Jen: We have several goals, but the one I take pride in the most is the quality of our work.  Customers expect that we will deliver a quality product and we want to do just that.  Along with that we have a focus on proficiency.  We not only want to deliver a quality product, but we want to do it in a timely manner.

If you could be anywhere in the universe for New Year’s Eve, where would you be and why?

Jen: Maui.  It is low key, warm, and has beaches.

What is your favorite movie snack?

Jen: Milk Duds….favorite snack anytime but especially at the movies.

Name one thing that many people do not know about you.

Jen: I am still very active in the volleyball community and play competitively 1-2 times per week.  I also participate in several tournaments throughout the year and have had the opportunity to travel to a few tournaments.
