Profiles in the Financial Aid Profession: Delicia Lewis from Florida Institute of Technology

March 8, 2011

Delicia Lewis, Loan Coordinator,Florida Institue of Technology

Kristi Jones: What do you like most about your job?

Delicia Lewis:  The students.  It is amazing how thoughtful they can be.  I just received flowers and a card last week and it makes a world of difference when they go out of their way  to thank you.

Kristi:  How many staff members are in your office?

Delica:  We have 21 in our Financial Aid Office.

Kristi:  What has been your biggest challenge over these past 12 months?

Delica:  Trying to balance workload for the increase of students and volume, especially since we were down a few staff members during the peak season.

Kristi:  With the implementation of FIT’s online degree program, how has that impacted your job?

Delicia:  It has had quite a large impact on how I manage my time.  My on-campus students are on site with me and they have always been first priority.  I have had to change my priorities around to make sure the online students were processed immediately, in order to help make the brand new program a success.  It was challenging at first to balance the large increase in students, but we adjusted and made it work.  The program has been very successful and we are up to 4,146 online students enrolled and 2,500 on-campus students.

Kristi:  What other big changes has your office undergone?

Delicia:  We recently implemented an internal call center within Financial Aid.  We hired and trained additional staff members to answer all incoming calls and counsel students on general questions.  This allows us to get the processing done. The implementation has been very successful.

Kristi:  What is one thing that people do not know about you?

Delicia:  I am an Evangelist at my church.  I just bought an acoustic guitar so that I can learn how to play.

Kristi:  What are your hobbies?

Delicia:  I am an Assistant Coach for the Women’s Basketball team at FIT.  I also love to sing, love spending time with my nieces and nephews and playing Wii Party.

Kristi:  You played on FIT’s Basketball team when you were a student.  What position did you play?

Delicia:  I was 6’2” Center.

Kristi:  When you were younger, did you want to be a professional basketball player?

Delicia:  I actually wanted to be a teacher.  I would ask my twin sister to sit down with me so that I could teach her math, before we went outside to play.  I did not start playing basketball until 8th grade and only scored 1 point that year.  In 10th grade, made the Junior Varsity team and was promoted to Varsity that year.  I played collegiate ball and also went on to play professionally in Europe for Netherland’s 3ES Lieshout.

Kristi:  What is your favorite TV show?

Delicia:  It is hard to pick just one.  I love Hannah Montana and most shows on the Disney Channel, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and One Tree Hill.

Kristi:  Who is your favorite singer?

Delicia:  I primarily listen to Gospel music. Fred Hammond is one of my favorite artists.

Kristi:  You come from a large family, how many siblings do you have?

Delicia:  I have 2 brothers, 2 older sisters, a twin sister and 8 nieces and nephews.  We have a family cruise planned, right after my commencement ceremony for my Master’s Degree and I am looking forward to getting together with the entire family.
