Faces of Nelnet: Beverly Carlson from Audit Services

April 19, 2011

Bev Carlson, Information Technology Audit Manager, Nelnet Audit Services

Dawn Knight: What are you most proud of with your department?

Bev Carlson: I am very proud of my department overall.  I have been performing external IT audits as well as audits in general for many years and I truly feel that Nelnet is ahead of the game in all areas.  We have very talented folks and everyone works well within the organization as a whole.  To be honest, I am really proud to be a part of this team.

Dawn: Please describe a typical day for you.

Bev: Well, I am a Mom of three kids and being a Mom comes first – especially right when the day begins.  I get them ready for the day and once that is done, I make my hour drive to Lincoln…with my iPod going, of course, to get motivated for the day.  Once in the office, I run from the hip on the fly in that I make myself available to the team, any external auditor(s) that may be in for the day, or whoever needs my attention.   And, everyone has my full attention at all times.

Basically, I have a ‘to do’ list but my schedule is not that is rigid….my day changes from day to day. I wouldn’t have it any other way.   I love it!

Dawn: What has been your biggest challenge work-wise over the past 12 months?

Bev: I look at ‘challenge’ as a motivator.  I get energy from a challenge placed in front of me.  The fact of having a Government contract is very proverbial to me. Over the years, I’ve become familiar with regulatory changes and requirements in most of my positions – so this is just another one of those ‘normal’ items for me.  This new challenge simply drives me.

Dawn: If a school asks you what you do for Nelnet that impacts them, what would you say?

Bev: We support the entire process – all areas – of the company and help to facilitate the global needs of the organization.  We ensure that those areas which are impacting the schools and borrowers are supported while also being fully compliant.  Only when those things are achieved can those areas be truly successful.

Dawn: If you could have dinner with anyone on the planet, who would that be and what would you order?

Bev: Alton Brown – the Food Network guy who is scientific about food.  He is really charismatic and I could listen to him forever.  I am addicted to the Food Network.  We could have good conversation over dinner and about dinner.  I’d order anything he’d recommend.

Dawn: What is one piece of clothing you just can’t live without?

Bev: Sweatshirts.  No matter the season, I love to wear sweatshirts….they are sort of my adult binky.

Dawn: What was your very first job?

Bev: In the summer between my junior and senior years in high school I worked two jobs.  I was a range ball picker at a golf course.  I’d pick up the golf balls when I could see them but would also ride the tractor at night to get the rest of them.  At night, I was a maid at the local Motel 6.
