Focus on Your Health: Too Tired to Exercise?

February 8, 2012

I think we can all agree that one’s wellness is a choice.  Whether it is eating healthier, exercising more, reducing one’s weight, kicking a smoking habit, or anything else related to improving an individual’s health, we all know that the choice is up to us; that nobody can make us do anything that we are not willing to do.  That is one of the many reasons that I feel fortunate to work for such a great company as Nelnet.  Many years ago, Nelnet made a conscious decision to create a healthier workforce by simply helping individuals help themselves.  What transpired was the implementation of a dynamic employee wellness program that has achieved the following results:

  • Healthier, happier employees
  • Increased productivity
  • Measurable weight loss success
  • Maintenance of low medical premiums for its employees
  • Reduced claims
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • and much more!

Nelnet partners with a company by the name of incentaHEALTH to help facilitate and manage its wellness program.  incentaHEALTH provides Nelnet with an Internet-based program that pays employees to lose weight and maintain good health through daily lifestyle coaching with consistent and ongoing support.

As a new feature to our blog, we would like to share excerpts from daily support messaging that participating employees receive.  Look for our Focus On Your Health feature that will include a wellness topic and a success strategy to help support any personal health-related goals that you may have for yourself.  Best of luck!

Too Tired to Exercise:  We can all come up with excuses not to exercise.  If you know that you will be tired at the end of the day, don’t plan your exercise then.  Try getting up an hour earlier, if possible, and start your day with exercise.  This way, you don’t have it hanging over your head all day.  In addition to getting it out of the way early, you will start your day off on the right foot with added energy and more burned calories.  When you exercise in the morning, your body has been fasting all night; so, you are burning stored fats and calories instead of the meal you had for lunch.  You will see a greater benefit to your weight loss by exercising early.  Yes, it is early in the morning, but it’s worth it!

Success Strategy:  Know your own tricks that stop you from being successful. Make a list of behaviors that sabotage your goals. Then put a plan together to help you stop falling to those temptations.
