Jodi Miller, Western Regional Director & Social Media Strategist, Nelnet Partner Solutions

Dawn Knight: Welcome to our team! So, tell me, what states will you be covering and when did you start exactly?

Jodi Miller: I work with schools in California, specifically in the Los Angeles area. However, I will also provide national support by managing our social media initiatives for our school clients including Jim’s Blog, FaceBook, Twitter, and our Weekly Update e-mail. (Click on those links and follow us!)

Dawn: Do you have any conferences coming up so your schools can meet you face-to-face?

Jodi: During the winter, I attended FSA in Las Vegas and CASFAA in Sacramento. I plan to attend various conferences across the country this spring/summer including SASFAA, IASFAA, WASFAA, and NASFAA. Please stop by the booth and visit with me. I will be the one with the camera, ready to take your picture or your video. I will make you famous! 🙂

Dawn: The coolest thing about your work experience is _________________.

Jodi: Two things – I get to be creative and I get to travel. Our team works closely with our Marketing department to come up with a lot of fun ideas and initiatives that turn into valuable resources for our school clients and borrowers. Even though I am a die-hard planner and organizer, I enjoy using my creative gene too.

I also love traveling. I have a goal to visit every state in the US. Airport layovers do not count. Only 12 left to go, and I will have several more crossed off the list by the end of the summer!

Dawn: The nerdiest thing about your work experience is_____________.

Jodi: Probably two of the traits I mentioned above – planner and organizer. I am very detailed-oriented on most things. I have to analyze a little and have at least a general plan in place before I take off on a project. Most of my team will really just run with something. I think that is great! We need people like that. I am sure I drive them a little crazy, but hopefully, it provides a good balance.

Dawn: If a school asks you why you wanted to be on the Partner Solutions team, what would you say?

Jodi: I can’t seem to get away from this team! I have been with Nelnet for almost 10 years, and I have been a part of various iterations of this team for the majority of my time here. It is such a great group of people, and I am very fortunate to work with them again. We are more than just a team – we are a family.

Dawn: What is your favorite app?

Jodi: I am so glad you asked me that question. Right now, I am a Pinterest addict. I love it! There are so many ideas for food, party planning, interior design, DIY, fashion, travel – a lot of my favorite things. If you haven’t checked it out, you must.

Dawn: What work-related phrase is over-used and drives you crazy when you hear it (mine is “over-arching”)?

Jodi: I have worked on a lot of sales and marketing communications over the years, so I have a ton of phrases that drive me crazy. Three that quickly come to mind are: “one-stop-shop,” “in our wheelhouse,” and “can leverage this.” I keep a mental list of these with a co-worker and friend. Recently, we added “special sauce” to the list.

Dawn: What was your very first job?

Jodi: I was a sandwich artist. I worked at a place in my little Virginia hometown called Sub Express from the time I was 15 until I went off to college. In fact, I began working a few months before I had my driver’s license, so my “mama” took me to work. It was hard because I missed out on high school football games and time with friends. However, it taught me a lot about accountability, and I am so thankful I had those lessons early in life.
