Let’s Sprout Something Great—Nelnet Launches Plant a Tree Project

June 4, 2012

Nearly 140,000 acres were scarred in the 2002 Hayman Fire at Pike National Forest.

The benefits of trees to the environment are numerous. Did you know that a single tree can absorb 10 pounds of air pollutants each year? Not only do trees absorb greenhouse gas emissions, they improve air quality, recycle water, create shade, and provide food and homes for living things across the planet. As part of an initiative to increase our commitment to sustainability and encourage borrowers to go paperless, Nelnet has signed a three-year contract with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant a tree for each borrower who opts in to eStatements. We have committed to plant a minimum of 75,000 trees over three planting seasons in the Pike National Forest in Colorado, which lost over 137,000 acres to forest fires in 2002.

Our goal is to increase paperless communications and help make it easy for borrowers to go green. When a Nelnet borrower opts in to eStatements, not only will we plant a tree, but he or she will also be eligible to enter to win a trip for two to Colorado Springs to visit the forest we are planting.

We will provide annual updates on the number of borrowers who have converted to paperless. The initiative, which launched June 1, 2012, runs through March 31, 2015 (the sweepstakes ends December 31, 2012). Learn more at

We’re excited to make a difference!
