Profiles in Financial Aid: Jill Desjean from Tufts University School of Medicine

October 4, 2012

Jill Desjean, Associate Director of Financial Aid, Tufts University School of Medicine

Meet Jill Desjean, Associate Director of Financial Aid at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts.

“Our students are just wonderful,” Jill says with a smile.  For over 16 years, Jill Desjean has worked in the financial aid profession.

“I was flipping burgers in the dining hall as my work-study job at Holy Cross, and I saw a posting for a job in the Financial Aid Office.  The idea of coming home from work and not smelling like french fries sounded pretty good. So I applied and got the job!  I worked there for three years during college and one year post-college.”

Jill’s financial aid career has included serving as Assistant Director at Brandeis, Associate Director at MIT, and Director of Graduate Aid at The New School.   Since 2007, Jill has been a part of the Tufts University School of Medicine team as Associate Director of Financial Aid.

“I love my job!”  Jill explains, “It’s so nice to have students who are truly appreciative of the work we do.  Our students are really committed to understanding their finances, becoming financially responsible, and working with us to plan for their future.  It’s great to know that they trust us enough to use us as their first resource for financial advice, and I also love to hear from our alumni years after graduation.”

Jill is extremely proud of her colleagues in the financial aid office.  “Everyone in this office is committed to the same goal and I love knowing that my office has earned such a great reputation on campus.”

One thing most people may not know about Jill is she has an extensive collection of 80’s music- mostly new wave but some other genres as well.  “I’m a little stuck in the 80’s,” laughs Jill.  When she is away from the office, she enjoys playing with her 2 ½ year-old son, Matthew.  “Trucks, running around, baseball—lots of boy things that I’ve never been particularly good at, but he doesn’t seem to have noticed yet!”  Jill and her husband love hiking and running.  “When I get some alone time, I love reading, baking, and yoga,” shares Jill.

“I’ve been so lucky in my career. Every director I have worked for has served as a mentor to me, and there’s no way I could have developed professionally without some kind of help from each of them,” says Jill.  She is especially appreciative of Frank Delaney, Peter Giumette, Betsy Hicks, Eileen Doyle, and Tara Olsen.
