Nelnet is always looking for ways to help students on their path to success, so we are proud of the many, varied internship opportunities we offer. These positions give students a chance to gain real experience in their field of choice. This new blog series will highlight our bright, achieving Nelnet interns, and the first article features Partner Solutions’ very own Megan Freese.

Megan recently began her role as Communications Intern and is quickly embracing the financial aid world, acronyms and all. She is a sophomore advertising and public relations major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Megan answered a few questions so we can get to know her better:

1. Why did you decide to accept an internship at Nelnet?

I decided to accept an internship at Nelnet after hearing about all of the great opportunities during my interview process. The interns here at Nelnet get great hands on experience. I was also excited to be a part of the company that is the #1 Federal Loan Servicer.

2. What aspect of being an intern at Nelnet do you most look forward to?

I am looking forward to working on team projects within the Nelnet Partner Solutions department. I love to write, so I’m also excited about getting to work on the intern blog series.

3. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends. I currently live in a sorority house with 64 other girls so there is never a dull moment. I also love to watch movies and cook, even though my cooking skills are not the greatest.

4. What do you want to do after college?

After college I want to stay in Lincoln, NE. I have lived in Lincoln all of my life and it’s exciting to see how much it has grown over the years, especially recently. Career wise, I want to work in the Communications and Public Relations field.

5. What’s something you have learned about Nelnet that you didn’t know before?

Before starting at Nelnet I did not realize how many services they provide. I’ve taken full advantage of the training sessions that Nelnet offers and I have learned a lot of useful information.

6. What financial literacy topics do you think are most pressing to students your age?

I think budgeting is a pressing issue for students my age. I have been guilty of not spending my money wisely multiple times. Most college students are not used to having to pay for things like school, books, rent, food, etc. My biggest problem is spending money on things that I want, instead of on things that I need. In a few years my expenses will increase as I become less dependent on my parents. Budgeting is something that I need to learn more about so that I do not run into financial troubles in the future.

7. What apps do you use the most on your phone?

I’m a social media fanatic so I’m always using the Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Vine apps on my phone. I also frequently use the app that my bank provides. It’s very convenient to see how much money I have available in my account and to see where I’m spending a majority of my money.

In future Nelnet Interns articles, Megan will be interviewing other interns from around the company. Please join me in welcoming her to the team and congratulating her on a successful college career thus far!
