School Service Center Spotlight: Ellen Wilson

November 15, 2013

Our School Service Center is a team of highly trained representatives who are available specifically to assist school financial aid officers. Over the upcoming months, we are going to highlight members of this team so that you can get to know the people with whom you may work with over the phone or through email. This first interview features Ellen Wilson, a School Service Center Advisor.

Kristi:  How long have you been with Nelnet?

Ellen:  I have been with Nelnet just over two years.

Kristi: What did you do prior to working with Nelnet?

Ellen:  I worked with a group that did fundraising for non-profit organizations.

Kristi: What is your favorite thing about the job?

Ellen:  Reaffirmations! They’re a nice challenge.

Kristi:  What do you find most challenging?

Ellen:  Parent Plus denial reaffirmations are very challenging. I’m usually pretty quick with my reaffirmations, but if there’s a Plus denial, it’s going to take me a while!

Kristi:  What do you like to do for fun?

Ellen:  I really love video games. I never outgrew them. I also like weightlifting (it’s very cathartic), as well as spending time with my husband.

Kristi:  What is the last movie that you watched in the theater?

Ellen:  We saw Oz in the theater. We don’t see movies a lot.

Kristi:  What is your favorite video game?

Ellen:  I like to play World of Warcraft. My husband often says I love it way too much, but he plays Halo and Call of Duty. So I think it is fair.  🙂

Kristi:  If you could have dinner with one famous person, who would it be?

Ellen:  Definitely David Bowie! The stories that he would have would be amazing.

Kristi:  Tell us about this cute four-legged friend in your picture.

Ellen:  That would be Church, who is one of three cats that we have! My husband and I went to find a cat at our local shelter, and Church basically made it clear that he was coming home with us. He’s incredibly friendly and relaxed. If you have a lap and are in our house, he’s going to lay in it.

Kristi:  What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that today’s direct loan borrowers face?

Ellen:  Overcoming how stressful it is! You have all of this debt and no idea how to pay it back, but there are so many options available to help. My husband is in nursing school, so I am in a situation where I understand how borrowers may feel. Having the knowledge about returning funds in the first 120 days, how student loans work, and what status he needs to be in for an in-school deferment has been incredibly helpful. It’s all doable; you just need to take a deep breath, ask for help if you need it, and keep your eyes on the prize! That $0 balance is possible!

Kristi:  What app or website do you frequently visit when not on the clock?

Ellen:  With my lifting, I’ve really gotten into Fitocracy. It is basically Facebook; only it lets you log your workouts. I also really enjoy Tumblr. I spend way too much time looking at random things on that!
