School Service Center FAQs: Notification of Death to Schools
During the FSA Conference, we observed one question that was asked several times by schools. The question was, “Do servicers notify schools once they become aware that a borrower has passed away?”. We want to share the steps Nelnet takes when these unfortunate circumstances occur.
Nelnet performs ongoing outreach to ensure schools are notified immediately. Any time we receive notification that a student has passed away, we check to see if they have loans in the actively monitored three-year CDR or in an in-school/grace status. If they do fall into this circumstance, we reach out to the school to notify them.We cancel any pending disbursements, and we update our records.
If your school would prefer not to receive this type of communication, please contact the School Service Center at 866.463.5638.
