Nelnet Lends a Hand to Local Communities and Organizations

December 22, 2015

The holiday season is a great time to give back to those less fortunate. Whether it be through lending a helping hand or providing monetary support, communities thrive when businesses and neighbors come together for the greater good. This year, Nelnet and our associates joined forces to support educational institutions and community organizations through the company’s matching gifts program, as well as Project Homeless Connect.

Created to align with Nelnet’s educational mission and core values, the matching gifts program allows associates’ monetary donations to be matched to the organization of their choice. Donations toward educational institutions are matched three to one, with community organizations matched one to one. Associates have utilized the matching gifts program supporting hundreds of schools and community organizations nationwide.

For many of these associates, including Greer McCurley, these donations carry a personal meaning. “The match allows us to leverage our donations to our children’s schools, as well as the high schools and colleges we attended,” he says. “I find the matching gift program to be one of the best perks of working at Nelnet.”

As a participating donor, associate Mark Schilmoeller agrees. “I attended a faith-based K-12 educational system and that education has benefited me in more ways than I could ever measure. If I am able to provide that opportunity to my children and others in my community, I will do what I can to make that happen.”

Associates have also helped those in their communities by volunteering their time to Project Homeless Connect, an event that strives to meet the needs of the homeless in their community and provides free medical, dental, and personal care.

“The guests receiving services appeared excited, interested, and grateful,” says Meri Sue Beard, Nelnet volunteer. “As I waited for my guest in one area, I watched those getting haircuts. One gentleman in particular caught my attention. He sat with his eyes closed and a slight smile as his hair was cut and combed. Clearly, he was savoring the moment.”

Throughout the year, Nelnet gives back to the communities in which we live and work from our offices across the country. The Lincoln office sponsored the 2015 St. Monica’s Amazing Chase event that raised $77,000 for women recovering from substance abuse or mental illnesses and their families in Lincoln. Denver associates came together to provide Thanksgiving baskets for the Sacred Heart House, a home for children and families living in poverty, and wrote heartfelt Valentine’s Day cards to the residents of Holly Heights Nursing Home.

Activities such as these are what make giving back such a rewarding experience. Nelnet and our associates understand the need for stronger, more connected communities, and will do what it takes to help those around us – through time, energy, and commitment. We are dedicated to making the world around us a better place – one act of kindness at a time.
