Latest from FSA: Reminder to Promote the Use of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool

October 6, 2016

FSA recently issued a reminder to institutions to promote the use of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool for both the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSA years.

As stated in the reminder, using the IRS DRT for both FAFSA years is “The most effective way to prevent conflicting information from occurring betweent the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSAs.”

FSA urges institutions to promote the use of the IRS DRT to students and their families – even those who did not initially use the IRS DRT for the 2016-2017 FAFSAs.

For more information, please see FSA’s electronic announcement.

We encourage and encourage. But as long as it remains optional on the FAFSA, many students and their parents and grandparents (we’re seeing so many more elderly grandparents raising kids), who find the process already confusing and overwhelming, are choosing not to use the IRS DRT with their initial filing. The “if it’s not required, I’m not going to do it” mentality…. It would be so much less time consuming for everyone involved if it was “required” on the FAFSA for those who qualify to use it.
